Why Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres Feel Different
There’s a certain ease to this neighborhood that doesn’t try too hard. You’ll notice it in the way chairs angle toward the street. In the unhurried service. And in how no one seems particularly concerned with time. The cafés here aren’t curated for visitors—they simply exist as they always have. Which is exactly why they feel so compelling to step into.
1. Café de Flore — Classic Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres, Revisited
Just about a 6-minute walk from my studio near Odéon, Café de Flore is one of the easiest iconic stops to weave into your morning.
Yes, it’s well known—but come early, before the rhythm picks up, and it feels entirely different. The light hits the red awnings just right, and there’s a quiet elegance to a simple café crème here. The interiors—mirrored walls, polished wood, tightly spaced tables—create a kind of intimacy that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.
I come here for that early stillness. It’s one of the few places where I genuinely slow down, even if I didn’t plan to. When I’m photographing nearby, I’ll often stop in just to reset—there’s something grounding about starting the day here before the streets fully wake up.
What to order:
Café crème (my official coffee order!) and a tartine
Best time:
Early morning

2. Les Deux Magots — A Paris Café in St Germain des Pres That Rewards Patience
Directly across from Café de Flore and also about a 6-minute walk from my studio, this café is incredibly convenient to pair with a morning shoot.
Across the street but with a distinct personality, this café feels slightly more expansive, less intimate. There’s more space to settle in, and the terrace has a softer openness that’s ideal for long conversations or simply watching the rhythm of the neighborhood unfold.
I like coming here when I don’t have a strict schedule. It’s a place that encourages lingering—where one coffee easily turns into two, and suddenly an hour has passed.
If I’m meeting a couple before a shoot, this is often where I suggest we start—it eases people into the day.

A quieter alternative with a more contemporary feel, Café Louise offers warmth without the crowds. The lighting inside is soft and flattering (which I notice immediately as a photographer), and the atmosphere feels relaxed without losing that Parisian character.

Le Procope is about a 4-minute walk from my studio, tucked along one of the quieter historic streets near Odéon.
Technically more restaurant than café, but worth including for its atmosphere alone. The interiors are layered—ornate details, deep colors, and rooms that seem to unfold as you walk through them. It feels storied without feeling staged.

There’s always a bit more energy here. It’s less about quiet reflection and more about being part of the moment. The terrace sits right at a lively intersection, making it ideal for people-watching without feeling overly crowded.
This is one of my go-to spots when I want that “in the middle of everything” feeling without the intensity of the main boulevard cafés. I’ve stopped here between shoots more times than I can count—it’s reliably vibrant, but never chaotic.

Once a haunt for painters, it still carries that slightly undone, creative atmosphere. The terrace feels casual in the best way, and the interiors have a lived-in quality that makes it feel authentic rather than curated.
I’m drawn to places that feel a little imperfect, and this is one of them. It’s especially nice if you’re someone who prefers quieter corners and a more local energy.

Tucked slightly away from the main flow, this café feels personal and a bit unexpected. The atmosphere is quieter, with a more intimate energy that’s perfect if you want a break from the busier streets.
As the name suggests, this cafe is directly across the street from the Luxembourg Gardens. If you choose to sit outside on a warm spring or summer day, this place offers a peaceful view of greenery within the garden from the terrace! Why not go for a stroll in the gardens afterward?
Treize au Jardin has amazing brunch food in a Southern style: think French toast with buttermilk biscuits, pecan crusted chicken, apples & honey, eggs benedict, quiche with house salad…the list goes on.
