Here are My Top 10 Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres! In other words: your curated guide to the Left Bank’s most photogenic, character-filled spots—places where the light lingers, the coffee is taken seriously, and every corner feels quietly cinematic.

St Germain des Pres has a reputation, yes—but beyond the postcard version of Paris, there’s a more layered rhythm here. Mornings stretch gently. Conversations last longer than expected. Cafés aren’t just stops; they’re part of the day’s architecture.

Whether you’re wandering between photo sessions or intentionally slowing down, these are the Paris cafés worth building time around. And honestly, this neighborhood is one of my favorite spots for portrait sessions – and one not many people know about!

And many of these spots are just a short walk from my photography studio near Odéon! Yes…I may be a bit biased.

Why Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres Feel Different

There’s a certain ease to this neighborhood that doesn’t try too hard. You’ll notice it in the way chairs angle toward the street. In the unhurried service. And in how no one seems particularly concerned with time. The cafés here aren’t curated for visitors—they simply exist as they always have. Which is exactly why they feel so compelling to step into.

1. Café de Flore — Classic Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres, Revisited

Just about a 6-minute walk from my studio near Odéon, Café de Flore is one of the easiest iconic stops to weave into your morning.

Yes, it’s well known—but come early, before the rhythm picks up, and it feels entirely different. The light hits the red awnings just right, and there’s a quiet elegance to a simple café crème here. The interiors—mirrored walls, polished wood, tightly spaced tables—create a kind of intimacy that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.

I come here for that early stillness. It’s one of the few places where I genuinely slow down, even if I didn’t plan to. When I’m photographing nearby, I’ll often stop in just to reset—there’s something grounding about starting the day here before the streets fully wake up.

What to order:

Café crème (my official coffee order!) and a tartine

Best time:

Early morning

2. Les Deux Magots — A Paris Café in St Germain des Pres That Rewards Patience

Directly across from Café de Flore and also about a 6-minute walk from my studio, this café is incredibly convenient to pair with a morning shoot.

Across the street but with a distinct personality, this café feels slightly more expansive, less intimate. There’s more space to settle in, and the terrace has a softer openness that’s ideal for long conversations or simply watching the rhythm of the neighborhood unfold.

I like coming here when I don’t have a strict schedule. It’s a place that encourages lingering—where one coffee easily turns into two, and suddenly an hour has passed.

If I’m meeting a couple before a shoot, this is often where I suggest we start—it eases people into the day.

What to order:

Hot chocolate or a glass of wine

Best time:

3. Café Louise — A Softer Take on Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres

Only about a 3-minute walk from my studio, Café Louise is one of the closest and most convenient options if you’re staying nearby.

A quieter alternative with a more contemporary feel, Café Louise offers warmth without the crowds. The lighting inside is soft and flattering (which I notice immediately as a photographer), and the atmosphere feels relaxed without losing that Parisian character.

I find myself recommending this spot often when clients want something “authentic” but not overwhelming. It’s approachable, comfortable, and easy to settle into—especially if you’re easing into your first day in Paris.

Cappuccino and pastries

Best time:

4. Le Procope — Historic Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres With Depth

Le Procope is about a 4-minute walk from my studio, tucked along one of the quieter historic streets near Odéon.

Technically more restaurant than café, but worth including for its atmosphere alone. The interiors are layered—ornate details, deep colors, and rooms that seem to unfold as you walk through them. It feels storied without feeling staged.

I love bringing people here when they want something with a sense of history but still feel inviting. It’s especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the light softens and the space feels even more atmospheric.

What to order:

Best time:

Late afternoon

5. Café Mabillon — A Lively Paris Café in St Germain des Pres

Just a 5-minute walk from my studio, Café Mabillon sits right at a lively intersection that always feels in motion.

There’s always a bit more energy here. It’s less about quiet reflection and more about being part of the moment. The terrace sits right at a lively intersection, making it ideal for people-watching without feeling overly crowded.

This is one of my go-to spots when I want that “in the middle of everything” feeling without the intensity of the main boulevard cafés. I’ve stopped here between shoots more times than I can count—it’s reliably vibrant, but never chaotic.

What to order:

Café allongé

Best time:

Afternoon

6. La Palette — Artistic Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres

About a 7-minute walk from my studio, La Palette feels slightly tucked away, which adds to its charm.

Once a haunt for painters, it still carries that slightly undone, creative atmosphere. The terrace feels casual in the best way, and the interiors have a lived-in quality that makes it feel authentic rather than curated.

I’m drawn to places that feel a little imperfect, and this is one of them. It’s especially nice if you’re someone who prefers quieter corners and a more local energy.

What to order:

Coffee or a simple glass of wine

Best time:

Late afternoon

Just a 2-minute walk from Katie Donnelly Photography, Saint André Café is one of the most conveniently charming cafés in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

With its classic bistro seating, soft natural light, and historic street backdrop, it offers a timeless ambiance that feels both local and effortlessly elegant. This Paris café feels like a quieter, more intimate answer to the neighborhood’s iconic institutions like Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore.

It stands out for its relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere in a neighborhood known for iconic but often crowded spots, making it perfect for a quieter, more authentic Parisian café experience.

Also, the café is especially ideal for portrait sessions, thanks to its warm tones, textured surroundings, and flattering light that make photos look naturally cinematic.

8. Café Bonaparte — Balanced Paris Cafés in St Germain des Pres

Just a 4-minute walk from my studio, Café Bonaparte is one of the easiest cafés to incorporate into your day without planning ahead.

Right on the edge of the neighborhood, this café strikes a balance between classic and accessible. The terrace is consistently inviting, and it’s a place that feels easy—never too formal, never too busy.

I often pass by here during walks and end up staying longer than I intended. It’s one of those dependable spots where everything just works, especially if you want a classic café experience without overthinking it.

9. Shakespeare and Company Café — A Literary Paris Café Near St Germain des Pres

About a 10-minute walk from my studio, this café pairs perfectly with a walk along the Seine.

Honestly, I can’t make a list of Paris cafes in this neighborhood without including Shakespeare & Co. It’s an absolute institution for book worms and culture-lovers alike!

Just a short walk away, this café pairs perfectly with a visit to the bookstore. It’s small, often busy, but undeniably charming, with views that make it worth navigating the crowd.

I love suggesting this stop after a morning walk along the Seine. It feels like a natural extension of the experience—coffee, books, and a slower pace all coming together.

What to order:

Coffee and lemon cake

Best time:

Middays

10. Treize au Jardin — A Different Kind of Paris Café in St Germain des Pres

About a 9-minute walk from my studio, this café feels just far enough removed from the busiest streets to offer a bit of quiet.

Tucked slightly away from the main flow, this café feels personal and a bit unexpected. The atmosphere is quieter, with a more intimate energy that’s perfect if you want a break from the busier streets.

As the name suggests, this cafe is directly across the street from the Luxembourg Gardens. If you choose to sit outside on a warm spring or summer day, this place offers a peaceful view of greenery within the garden from the terrace! Why not go for a stroll in the gardens afterward?

Treize au Jardin has amazing brunch food in a Southern style: think French toast with buttermilk biscuits, pecan crusted chicken, apples & honey, eggs benedict, quiche with house salad…the list goes on.

In fact, their lunch food is also amazing – so you just can’t go wrong here!

This is one of those places I almost hesitate to share—but it’s too good not to include. I come here when I want to fully slow down, especially on longer days when I need a quieter reset.

Bonus:

The servers are usually fluent in English – so don’t stress if your French is a bit rusty!

What to order:

Tea and homemade cake

Best time:

Late morning
