Rainy days in Paris are a wonderful excuse to find some cozy indoor escapes!

As a professional portrait photographer in Paris, I can’t get enough of that special charm that comes through in rainy day photography sessions.

If you’ve seen the movie Midnight in Paris, you’ll know what I mean. Owen Wilson’s character is always talking about how Paris in the rain is somehow even more beautiful than on a sunny day. He’s a hopeless romantic, and so are we.

A rainy day is the perfect time to explore Parisian indoor gems that offer warmth, culture, and charm, all while keeping you dry!

Finding what’s special in each season

Obviously, the summer months in Paris are gorgeous. But with the sun comes a pressure to spend your days outside, gallivanting around the city parks and soaking up rays. Don’t get me wrong, I love it! But I also think it’s an unexpected joy to be forced indoors during the rainy moments of spring. Then, we get to enjoy all the beautiful interiors of Paris! And believe me, there are SO many worth seeing.
Like winter, the rainy season of early spring is basically telling you to slow down and be patient. The holidays have wound to a close, but you can still indulge in baked goods and browse around department stores like Galeries Lafayette. Sip on rich wines in historical bars. Peruse bookshops while savoring a cappuccino. I mean, come on…

Whether you’re going on a solo trip or a trip with friends or family, here are some of my top recommendations for indoor spots that are worth visiting on rainy days:

Another great thing is that after the winter holidays, there are fewer crowds. To me, that’s the perfect opportunity to soak up my favorite spots.

1. Rainy Days in Bibliothèques: Where History Meets Quiet Bliss

Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève

Nestled near the Panthéon in the Latin Quarter, this 19th-century library is an architectural marvel. It was designed by Henri Labrouste, and the ornate reading room with its vaulted ceilings provides a serene escape from the downpour.

Bonus: Then the nearby Café Panis is perfect for a hot chocolate post-visit. Bring a good book and bask in the cozy rainy season of Paris.

Location:

10 Place du Panthéon, 75005 Paris

Bibliothèque Mazarine

France’s oldest public library, Bibliothèque Mazarine, boasts an intimate, wood-paneled ambiance. If you’re a bookworm or scholar, you could easily lose yourself in its collection of rare manuscripts. Otherwise, if you could care less about literature, you can simply admire the craftsmanship of the space. And it’s worth it just for that. It’s a slice of old-world Paris in the heart of the city.

Location:

23 Quai de Conti, 75006 Paris

Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand

If modern architecture is more your speed, the National Library of France offers striking views of the Seine and an extensive collection housed within its sleek glass towers. Also, the adjoining cafés provide a cozy pitstop. Armed with a coffee, a stunning river Seine view, AND indoor heating…what more do you need?

2. Rainy Days in Elegant Tea Salons: Warm Up with a Parisian Touch

Angelina Paris

So…this place is known for its legendary hot chocolate and Mont Blanc dessert! Enough said, right? Because dessert is always a good idea and French cuisine is not to be missed!

Also, Angelina is the quintessential Parisian tea room. It has Belle Époque interiors that exude warmth and elegance, making it an ideal spot to relax after a stroll along the Seine.

Location:

226 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris

Le Valentin

Nestled in Passage Jouffroy, this hidden gem offers a mix of rustic charm and delectable pastries. The retro atmosphere and warm beverages make it one of my favorites for rainy afternoons. Bring a book or just enjoy people-watching in the lively arcade. I’ve gotta say, people watching in cafés is genuinely one of my favorite pastimes, and probably the number one thing I would recommend to people visiting Paris for the first time. You should absolutely fit this activity into your Paris itinerary.

Visiting in February during Valentine’s Day? Because the name says it all!

Location:

30 Passage Jouffroy, 75009 Paris

Mariage Frères

This is the spot for tea aficionados!! Mariage Frères’ luxurious salons offer an unforgettable experience. Pair your steaming pot of jasmine or Earl Grey with their delicate tea-infused pastries. Need to warm up with your family after walking around outside? Planning to go on a romantic indoor date with your loved one who adores drinking tea? Then, this is a great choice. You will not regret it!

3. Historic Theaters: A Night of Entertainment Indoors

Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens

This iconic theater, located near the Opéra Garnier, is absolutely steeped in history (see how I made a tea pun? haha). It has plush interiors and top-notch performances (ranging from plays to comedies depending on your interests), which makes it a great rainy evening activity.
I personally think one of the keys to surviving a day of endless rain, is to make some evening plans out in the city. Then, if you plan in advance to go to a concert or theater performance, it will give you something to look forward to. And it can help prevent you from feeling lethargic and stuck at home in the evening. Basically, the city is still alive, we just need an excuse to get out and enjoy it!

Location:

4 Rue Monsigny, 75002 Paris

Le Grand Rex

Interestingly, this is Europe’s largest cinema and a true Parisian landmark, Le Grand Rex is famous for its stunning art deco interiors. Inearly spring, it often hosts special screenings and family-friendly events.

Location:

1 Boulevard Poissonnière, 75002 Paris

Théâtre du Châtelet

This historic theater near the Seine offers a mix of ballet, opera, and musical performances. With, its majestic interiors, gilded balconies, and cozy seating, it creates the perfect ambiance for a cultural escape.

4. Art Galleries and Museums: Immersion in Culture

Musée de l’Orangerie

Additionally, Paris has world-class museums. Coincidentally, rainy weather mean it’s the perfect time to visit the Centre Pompidou or the Louvre museum and say hey to the Mona Lisa!

Any Monet fans out there? I’ve found the place for you. And that means basically everyone, because who isn’t a Monet fan?

This is a smaller and more intimate museum located in the Tuileries Garden, the Orangerie is famed for Monet’s mesmerizing Water Lilies series. It’s the perfect indoor retreat to look at art without the larger crowds of the Louvre. I can’t recommend this museum enough for art lovers. Because I just love it so much.

Location:

Jardin Tuileries, 75001 Paris

Musée Jacquemart-André

Another amazing spot! This museum honestly feels more like stepping into a grand Parisian residence. The museum’s exquisite art collection and adjoining café make it an elegant rainy day hideaway.

Location:

158 Boulevard Haussmann, 75008 Paris

Atelier des Lumières

Okay, enough with the old, historical sites. Need a change of pace? For a modern, immersive art experience, this digital art center is unbeatable. Its ongoing exhibits transform famous paintings into dynamic light shows that captivate both adults and children alike. I think this spot is a perfect choice for families with young kids who don’t have the patience for wandering slowly through traditional museums. Because this will keep the family entertained while also being educational!

Location:

38 Rue Saint-Maur, 75011 Paris

5. Quirky Indoor Experiences: For Something Unique

Additionally, I wanted to include a section for interesting, miscellaneous spots that offer more of a wild card experience. Something you can’t replicate and probably won’t expect.

Passage Verdeau and Passage Jouffroy

These covered passages exude 19th-century charm and are filled with antique shops, quirky boutiques, and cafés. Perfect for strolling and shopping without braving the drizzle. Would absolutely recommend wandering through these passages and just seeing what catches your eye. Sometimes it’s all about exploring the city like you’re on a treasure hunt.

Location:

9th Arrondissement

Curiosity Shops

Paris is home to a plethora of curiosity shops and hole-in-the-wall boutiques. From taxidermy-filled stores like Deyrolle to the eclectic trinkets at Le Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, these spots offer one-of-a-kind finds and a peek into Paris’ eccentric charm.

You should make time to check out at least one of these during your time in Paris!

  • Le Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen – 18 Arrondissement
  • Deyrolle: Serving Up Strange since 1831 – 7th Arrondissement (https://deyrolle.com)
  • L’Objet qui parle – 18th Arrondissement (same neighborhood as Le marche aux puces, so you’ll have easy access to both!)

Also go check out our blog that goes into detail on the absolute best gift and souvenir shops in Paris. I’ve gone on and on about some of these curiosity shops and flea markets because they’re so worth checking out. If your interest has been piqued, click HERE

Traditional Hammams

Then experience relaxation the real Parisian way at a hammam.

Okay time for a history lesson! First, the hammam tradition came from the ancient Romans. Later, it became a big part of North African culture. Hammams were a place for communal gathering and of course physical cleansing. After immigrants from North Africa settled in France during the 20th century, the tradition of hammams became solidified.

Anyways, I think it’s cool that over time, hammams have gained popularity in Paris as a cultural and wellness experience. I love hammams. Because you can get a blend of relaxation, purification, and connection to Paris’ multicultural heritage.

Hammam Pacha

The Hammam Pacha in the 5th arrondissement is a historic favorite, offering steam rooms, scrubs, and massages in an opulent, warm setting perfect for a rainy day. I do this a few times a year just for a reset and self-care day. So worth it. Then you’ll feel incredible afterwards.

Location:

17 Rue Mayet, 75006 Paris

Le Secret des Mines Escape Room

Another great option for families and friends looking for a fun group activity…Paris offers a variety of immersive escape rooms. Le Secret des Mines is one of the best-rated options and provides a warm, thrilling indoor adventure. If you’re an escape room master, why not cross one of your list in the City of Lights? Conversely, if you’ve never done an escape room before, you might just discover a world of fun. And in Paris of all places!

Location:

Multiple across Paris

Whether you’re diving into a captivating novel in a historic library, sipping on velvety hot chocolate in a tea salon, or soaking in the beauty of Parisian theaters and museums, these indoor escapes will keep you dry and inspired this spring. Be sure to also visit all the old beauties, like Notre Dame Cathedral (since it’s finally open again!), Hôtel de Ville, Musée d’Orsay, Palais Royal, and on and on…
