Rainy day Paris photoshoots often create some of the most beautiful, atmospheric, and memorable images we capture in the city.
When clients first see bad weather, gray skies, or unexpected Paris rain in the forecast, their initial reaction is usually concern.
Will the photos still be beautiful? Should we reschedule? Will we spend the entire session hiding from the weather?
After years of photographing couples, families, solo travelers, and proposals throughout Paris, I can confidently say that some of my favorite galleries have happened on rainy days.
Rain changes the city. The pace slows. The light becomes softer. The streets become quieter. Reflections appear where there were none before. The familiar Paris landmarks take on an entirely different personality.
I love that the result is a collection of images that often feels more intimate, more cinematic, and more uniquely Parisian than what you might experience on a perfect blue-sky morning. Whether it’s your first time in Paris or your first visit to the city, rainy weather offers a completely different perspective on the beauty of Paris.

Why Paris Feels So Special in the Rain
The city of light was built for walking. The historic architecture, wide boulevards, stone facades, café terraces, and tree-lined gardens all seem to respond beautifully to changing weather conditions.
Paris in good weather is wonderful. Paris in the rain is wonderful for completely different reasons. While many visitors dream of blue skies and clear skies, there is something undeniably special about Parisian rain and the atmosphere it creates.
If you’re familiar with Midnight in Paris, then you’ll know one of my favorite references! Owen Wilson’s character says that he thinks Paris is the most beautiful in the rain. I couldn’t agree more. I just LOVE the long opening sequence of the movie as it moves through Paris on a rainy day. SO magical!
Paris in good weather is wonderful. Paris in the rain is wonderful for completely different reasons.

Client Feature: Caroline’s Rainy Day Paris Photoshoot
Caroline’s happy place is Paris. She came for a weekend and our session was full of rain. But it didn’t stop us. It never does. Rain or shine, Paris is Paris… and Paris is magic.
Caroline is a thoughtful and deliberate person and I love that about her. Each year she comes back and she does a portrait session with us and each year it’s a little bit different (though we always stop for coffee along the way!!). I love that each conversation we have makes me think and is so memorable. Also she has such good taste and I always get event and spa recommendations from her!!!
I just LOVE the elegant editorial look of her rainy day Paris photoshoot. Not to mention, her sense of style is incredible.
How Rain Transforms Your Photos
One of the biggest misconceptions about rainy-day photography is that rain makes photos darker or less flattering.
In reality, overcast skies create some of the most beautiful natural light a photographer can ask for.
Basically, cloud cover acts like a giant softbox, creating an incredibly flattering light source across faces and reducing harsh shadows. Skin tones photograph beautifully, and we can often shoot throughout the morning—or during an early morning session—without worrying about strong sunlight creating contrast.
Rain adds visual elements that don’t exist on dry days:
- Reflections on cobblestone streets
- Glossy stone architecture
- Atmospheric backgrounds
- Movement from umbrellas and coats
- A sense of story and place
Instead of looking like a generic vacation photo, rainy-day images often feel like a moment from a film.
The Best Covered Locations for a Rainy Paris Photoshoot
One of the reasons rainy-day sessions work so well in Paris is that the city offers so many beautiful covered locations.

Bir-Hakeim Bridge: Rainy Paris Photoshoot
The covered section of Pont de Bir Hakeim is one of our favorite rainy-day locations.
The architecture creates beautiful symmetry, while the iconic Eiffel Tower view remains visible even during light rain. As an iconic spot for any Paris photo shoot, it offers shelter while still showcasing one of the city’s most recognizable views.

Café Terraces: Rainy Day Photoshoot
Covered terraces at Parisian cafes and cozy cafés provide protection while still allowing us to photograph the surrounding streets and architecture. There is something timeless about sitting with a coffee while rain falls beyond the awning.
Covered Walkway at Luxembourg Gardens: Rainy Day Photoshoot
Luxembourg Gardens remains one of my favorite locations throughout the year, and it works beautifully during rainy weather.
The covered walkway offers protection while maintaining the elegance and greenery that make the gardens so special. It allows us to continue photographing even if rain arrives unexpectedly.

Parks with Big Tree Coverage: Rainy Day Photoshoot
Many of Paris’s parks offer surprisingly good protection from light rain thanks to their large tree canopies.
These locations allow us to continue creating natural, garden-inspired portraits while avoiding the heaviest rainfall. The rain also enriches the colors of the foliage, creating especially beautiful greens throughout the year.
Street Style Portraits Under Awnings: Rainy Day Photoshoot
Standing beneath a café awning. Walking along a Haussmann-lined street. Pausing beneath architectural details while the city moves around you.
These moments feel authentic and spontaneous. They often become some of the most memorable images because they reveal the city’s character and sometimes even its hidden gems.

Why Rain Works Beautifully for Family Photoshoots
Parents often worry that rain will make family sessions difficult.
In practice, children tend to embrace the weather far more easily than adults.
Rain naturally encourages movement, playfulness, and interaction. Families huddle together under umbrellas, laugh together, and stay physically connected. Those moments often create some of the most genuine expressions we capture.
The result is a gallery that feels alive rather than overly posed.

Rainy-Day Couple Sessions Feel Effortlessly Romantic
There is a reason filmmakers have been using rain as a storytelling tool for decades.
Rain creates closeness.
Couples naturally move closer together. They share umbrellas. They hold hands. They focus on each other rather than everything happening around them.
The images often feel intimate without trying to be. These weather conditions naturally create intimate moments that help tell a genuine love story. A rainy walk through Paris can feel like a spontaneous romantic stroll through the city.

Solo Portraits Take on an Editorial Feel: Rainy Paris Photoshoots
For solo travelers, rainy weather can create some of the most striking images of a Paris session.
The city becomes a backdrop rather than a busy tourist destination. As a professional photographer, I often find that rainy weather helps create portraits that feel elevated, sophisticated, and uniquely Parisian.

What to Wear for a Rainy Paris Photoshoot
The key is embracing the weather rather than trying to fight it.
Some recommendations include:
- Classic trench coats
- Structured wool coats
- Elegant layers
- Waterproof footwear
- Rich neutral colors
- Textures that photograph well in soft light
Rainy-day sessions are not the time for athletic rain jackets or overly casual outerwear. Thoughtful layering photographs beautifully and helps keep you comfortable throughout the session.

Our Transparent Umbrellas Photograph Beautifully
One of our favorite rainy-day accessories is a transparent umbrella.
Unlike traditional umbrellas, clear umbrellas allow light to pass through while keeping everyone protected from the rain.
They also preserve visibility of faces, architecture, and backgrounds, making them ideal for portraits.
We keep elegant transparent umbrellas available specifically for rainy-day sessions, and they consistently become one of the most beautiful visual elements in the final gallery.

Prefer to Stay Completely Dry? We Also Offer Studio Sessions
While many clients end up loving their rainy-day Paris photoshoot, we understand that not everyone wants to spend time outdoors in wet weather.
For clients who would prefer to avoid the rain entirely, we also offer studio sessions.
Our studio provides a refined, elegant environment with beautiful light and a timeless aesthetic. It can be a wonderful option for portraits, maternity sessions, personal branding, boudoir photography, or simply creating beautiful images without worrying about the forecast.
And if you’d like a touch of rainy-day romance without standing in the weather, our transparent umbrellas photograph beautifully inside the studio as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rainy Paris Photoshoots
Should we cancel if rain is forecast?
Usually, no.
Light showers, intermittent rain, and overcast weather often create ideal photography conditions. We carefully monitor Paris weather and adjust locations as needed.
What if it rains heavily?
Even during a heavy downpour, we adapt. Paris offers many covered locations, and we can often adjust the route while still creating a beautiful gallery.
Will our photos still include Paris landmarks?
Absolutely.
Locations such as Bir-Hakeim allow us to photograph iconic Paris views while remaining protected from the weather.
Are rainy-day photos suitable for families?
