As a portrait photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless individuals in their best light. Over the years, I’ve come to understand the importance of maintaining up-to-date professional headshots, which is something I LOVE doing.
Itโs so fun and SO empowering for everyone involved. I think thereโs something really cool and powerful about doing a solo shoot with the goal of having portraits that show only yourself without any distractions. Itโs your time to shine!
You might be wondering, “Do I really need to update my headshots that often?”
The answer is a resounding yes, and let me share why.
1. Reflect Your Current Self
Our appearance naturally changes over time. Whether it’s a new hairstyle, a change in fashion, or simply the natural aging process, our outward appearance evolves. Your headshot should accurately represent who you are at the present moment.
I consistently have portraits taken of myself for this reason. Even subtle changes are important to include. And new headshots just feel fresh, like you can reinvent yourself if you want to. Think of it as the Spring cleaning of photography. Itโs time to throw out the old (and by this I mean archive) and then revamp your profile with something fresh and new. It just feels good.
Outdated headshots can also mislead potential clients, potential employers, or contacts about your current appearance and style. Being as honest as possible in your application process for a new job is so important in establishing rapport and credibility.
Even just surprising a potential employer with significant change in hair color or style can throw them for a loop and even subconsciously affect the decision-making process. Be transparentโฆand that means having current photos.
2. Stay Relevant in Your Industry
In today’s fast-paced world, (especially the corporate world) industries are constantly evolving. What may have been considered trendy or appropriate a few years ago could now be outdated, like fashion trends, facial hair, and brand identity.
Keeping your headshots fresh and modern demonstrates that you are proactive and in tune with current trends within your profession. It shows that you’re not stuck in the past but rather embracing the present and looking toward the future. It’s a good rule of thumb to keep track of your last professional headshot and take into account any recent life or style transitions (like a new haircut and other appearance changes, or major changes to your career path) when planning your next professional headshot session and also your next professional look.
This is SO important! Especially if youโre working in a tech field like software, you should follow this principle. You want to show that youโre at the forefront of change and not lagging behind or neglecting parts of your life (even something as simple as a headshot).
3. Make a Strong First Impression
Your headshot is often the first impression you make on potential clients, employers, or business partners. A polished and professional headshot conveys confidence, reliability, and professionalism.
On the other hand, an outdated or unprofessional headshot may raise doubts about your credibility and competence. By updating your headshots regularly, you ensure that you’re always making the best first impression possible.
Working with a professional photographer often involves receiving instant feedback during the shoot. This feedback might include posing tips, expressions, or even wardrobe suggestions. This guidance helps individuals feel more confident in front of the camera and reassures them that they’re presenting themselves in the best possible way. If you want to make a lasting impression, you need headshots that will show your unique personality and your personal branding in the best possible light.
Quality Results: Professional photographers have the expertise, equipment, and artistic vision to capture individuals in their best light. Seeing high-quality images of oneself can be incredibly empowering and can enhance self-esteem. Knowing that you look your best in your headshots can translate to increased confidence in various aspects of your professional and personal life.
4. Showcase Your Personal Brand
Your headshot is an essential component of your personal brand. It’s not just a picture; it’s a visual representation of your identity, values, and personality. Updating your headshots allows you to refine and strengthen your personal brand over time. Whether you’re rebranding yourself or simply refining your image, fresh headshots can help you convey the message you want to send to the world.
And one of the best parts is that you can get a personalized experience tailored to your preferences and goals. Whether it’s choosing the right backdrop, selecting the most flattering angles, or highlighting specific features, the process revolves around showcasing your unique qualities. If you’re a creative person and want to build a brand that is really YOU, booking a personal headshot session is a no-brainer.
5. Adapt to Changing Platforms
In today’s digital age, your headshot is more important than ever. It’s not just for your LinkedIn profile or company website; it’s also used on social media platforms, online portfolios, and networking sites.
Donโt forget that each platform has its own specifications and requirements for profile pictures. By updating your headshots regularly, you ensure that your image is optimized for every platform, maximizing your online presence and visibility.
Not to mention, the algorithm likes NEW photos. Instagram likes new photos too. The reality is that you will get more traffic on your social media platforms if you consistently update photos of yourself and provide the algorithm with new content. Thatโs just how it goes.
Oh also, if you just got a big new job and your photo will be featured on the company’s website, you should definitely get new professional headshots. If you check out the current look of the website, you can get an idea of the portrait style that will represent both you AND the website you work for best. There’s nothing worse than having an outdated image on a website for an exciting new job you got, or on the back cover of the book you’re getting published! If it will be visible to the public, it’s essential to make a positive first impression. In some cases, it can even be impossible to change it later on. So take your high-end headshots seriously and make sure they’re getting regular updates.
6. Build Your Own Confidence
This is a HUGE benefit you probably didnโt think about.
Frequent professional headshots offer not only high-quality images but also intangible rewards such as increasedย self-assuranceย andย confidence. By investing in yourself through professional photography, you can actually cultivate a stronger sense of self-esteem and project confidence in all areas of your life.
Every photoshoot is an opportunity for individuals to see themselves through the photographer’s lens, often in a more flattering and artistic way than they’re accustomed to. This is one of my favorite parts of the job! I get to see people see themselves as beautiful!
This positive reinforcement can challenge negative self-perceptions so you can build a greater sense of self-worth and confidence. Regularly updating headshots allows you to witness your growth and evolution over time, reinforcing a positive self-image.
Knowing that you have a strong, professional image can boost confidence when networking, applying for jobs, or representing your brand.
Iโve learned that updating your professional headshots every three years is not just about vanity; it’s about maintaining accuracy, relevance, and professionalism in a dynamic world. As a portrait photographer, I encourage you to invest in yourself and your personal brand by keeping your headshots fresh and up-to-date. Trust me, the investment will pay off in the long run.
Until next time, keep smiling and stay picture-perfect!
