Working with friends is one of the perks of my job. Either working with a family/couple and then becoming friends with them OR being friends first and then having the honor of photographing their happy moments.
It’s even more intimate.
Ben and Trena are the latter, I’ve known them for a while and LOVE them, and through photographing their engagement, well I really think it made us closer.
I got to hear their love story and go along with them (and Lucy their doggie!) around the places in NYC where they fell in love: Central Park, Washington Square and commuting through Grand Central to see each other. The night they met, they talked and walked through Washington Sq park and all around Manhattan for hours. Both of them are incredibly interesting, smart and funny people. They are compassionate, interested in a lot of things, and curious. All wonderful qualities.
As we went along during our photo session, I felt like they were taking me down memory lane with them, hearing more about Trena’s past and work in Africa. Ben, I’ve known for almost 10 years now (holy cow) so it was more about seeing how he reacts to what Trena says. How he’s so proud of her, and totally in love with everything about her. I left this session feeling like I was 100x closer to them, honored to document such a love story with two very ‘normal’, yet very extraordinary people.
