Dressing the Modern Muse: Where to Shop In Paris for a Boudoir Photoshoot is about approaching your wardrobe with intention, choosing pieces that feel authentically you, and discovering where to shop in Paris for a boudoir photo shoot that photographs beautifully.

As a Paris boudoir photographer, one of the most common questions I receive after a client books a photo session is:

“What should I wear?”

Whether you’re planning your session as a special occasion, celebrating a milestone, or simply giving yourself the perfect opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, the answer is almost always the same:

Whatever helps you feel most like yourself.

If you’ve read my recent blog post about The Modern Muse Boudoir Atelier experience, you know that this work is not about becoming someone else in front of the camera. It is not about performing femininity or squeezing yourself into an idea of what boudoir “should” look like. Instead, it is about presence. Identity. Self-recognition.

Your wardrobe is simply another storytelling tool.

The pieces you choose should support the feeling you want to create, not distract from it.

Some women arrive with exquisite French lace lingerie. Others wear vintage denim and nothing else. Some choose silk robes or a silk slip dress they’ve owned for years. Others borrow a blazer from their partner’s closet.

The most photogenic wardrobe is rarely the most complicated one.

It is the one that feels intentional.

Start With The Feeling, Not The Outfit: Dressing the Modern Muse for Boudoir

Before shopping for anything new, ask yourself:

How do I want these images to feel?

Soft and romantic?

Bold and powerful?

Minimal and editorial?

Sensual and feminine?

Effortlessly French?

The answer to that question should guide every wardrobe decision that follows.

One of the reasons I love the Modern Muse approach is that it creates space for many different expressions of femininity. There is no single formula.

For some women, that expression is delicate lace.

For others, it is tailored suiting.

For others, it is simply bare skin, natural light, and a favorite pair of jeans.

The goal is not to create a costume.

The goal is to create images that still feel like you years from now.

The Most Underrated Boudoir Wardrobe? Your Own Closet

Before you step into a boutique, open your wardrobe.

You may already own everything you need.

Some of my favorite boudoir looks are surprisingly simple:

Slightly Oversized Jeans + Bare Skin

This is a timeless editorial look.

A pair of well-fitting jeans worn low on the hips creates beautiful shape and texture in photographs. Paired with bare shoulders or a topless silhouette, the result feels effortlessly confident rather than overtly styled.

White Button-Down Shirt

Nothing photographs quite like a crisp white shirt.

Whether worn buttoned, slipping off one shoulder, or wrapped loosely around the body, it creates movement, softness, and a sense of intimacy that feels beautifully Parisian.

Tailored Blazer + Nothing Underneath

For women drawn to a stronger, more fashion-forward aesthetic, a structured blazer can be incredibly powerful.

The contrast between tailoring, skin, and confident body language creates images that feel sophisticated, modern, and undeniably chic.

Silk Pajamas or Loungewear

Luxury isn’t always lace.

Beautiful silk separates, silk robes, a favorite robe, or elevated sleepwear can create a cozy look that feels refined and deeply personal.

A Meaningful Piece

  • A vintage necklace.
  • Your wedding veil.
  • A favorite cashmere sweater.
  • The dress you wore on a transformative trip.

Sometimes the most compelling styling choices are the ones connected to your story.

My Favorite Looks: Celebrity Boudoir Inspiration

Whenever a client tells me she’s worried she doesn’t own “the right” thing to wear for her boudoir session, I always think of some of the most memorable fashion photographs ever created. So many iconic images feature nothing more than a pair of perfectly worn-in jeans, an oversized white button-down, or a beautifully tailored blazer.

Think of women like Kate Moss, who practically made denim and an unbuttoned shirt a fashion statement, or Caroline de Maigret, whose effortless French style often revolves around menswear-inspired pieces and a certain undone confidence. More recently, models like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber have embraced the same aesthetic in editorial shoots—oversized blazers worn against bare skin, relaxed denim paired with minimal styling, and simple pieces that allow their confidence to take center stage.

I think that’s what makes these looks so timeless. They don’t feel overly styled or trend-driven. They feel effortless. A white button-down can be just as sensual as lace. A blazer can feel just as powerful as lingerie. Sometimes even more so.

It’s a good reminder that boudoir isn’t really about what you’re wearing—it’s about how you feel wearing it. The pieces that photograph best are often the ones that already feel like an extension of who you are.

The Paris Boutique I Recommend Most: Madame Sensuelle

If you are hoping to purchase lingerie specifically for your Paris boudoir session, my first recommendation is almost always Madame Sensuelle.

Located on the Left Bank in the 6th arrondissement (by our Paris studio!), Madame Sensuelle offers a thoughtfully curated collection of French and international lingerie brands in an intimate, feminine setting.

Their boutique specializes in helping women find pieces that feel elegant, sensual, and beautifully tailored to their personal style. They also offer personalized guidance and private fitting experiences, which can be especially helpful if you’re investing in lingerie for the first time.

Rather than focusing on trends, Madame Sensuelle feels aligned with the spirit of the Modern Muse experience: helping women explore confidence, femininity, and self-expression through pieces that feel intentional and elevated. Their collections include brands such as Maison Close, Atelier Amour, Aubade, Marjolaine, Dita Von Teese Lingerie, and Bluebella, offering options that range from timeless French elegance to more fashion-forward statement pieces.

For clients who want a truly Parisian lingerie-shopping experience before their session, this is often where I suggest starting.

Q&A with Madame Sensuelle: Lingerie and Boudoir

We asked Madame Sensuelle to tell us the story behind her Paris lingerie boutique and to tell us her thoughts on femininity, lingerie, boudoir, empowerment, and the importance of style and elegance in the heart of Paris.

We hope you enjoy her answers as much as we do!

1. Tell us the story behind Madame Sensuelle. What inspired you to create a lingerie boutique dedicated to women in Paris?

Madame Sensuelle was created to celebrate the art of French femininity — elegant, confident, sensual, and effortlessly refined.

Inspired by Paris, the historic capital of lingerie, the boutique was designed as a destination where women can discover exceptional French and European lingerie, corsetry, hosiery, and statement pieces in an intimate and welcoming setting.

At Madame Sensuelle, we believe that lingerie is much more than something worn beneath clothing. It is a form of self-expression, a way to reconnect with confidence, beauty, and femininity. Whether a woman is preparing for a boudoir photoshoot, a romantic occasion, or simply choosing something for herself, our role is to guide her toward pieces that reflect her personality and make her feel extraordinary.

Many visitors come to Paris searching for a piece of French elegance to take home with them. We love being part of that experience by offering not only beautiful lingerie, but also a uniquely Parisian moment through our private fittings and personalized styling advice.

2. What do you see happen when a woman finds a piece that makes her feel truly confident?

The transformation is often immediate. Her posture changes, her smile appears naturally, and she starts seeing herself differently. The right lingerie is not about impressing someone else; it is about revealing a part of yourself that is often hidden behind daily responsibilities and routines. When a woman finds the perfect piece, she doesn’t just wear it — she embodies it.

3. Madame Sensuelle and Katie Donnelly Photography both work with women during very personal moments. Why do you think confidence and self-expression are so closely connected?

Because confidence comes from authenticity. Whether through lingerie or photography, women are given permission to express a side of themselves that is often overlooked. Boudoir photography and beautiful lingerie both celebrate individuality rather than perfection. When a woman feels free to express who she truly is, confidence follows naturally.

4. If every woman left Madame Sensuelle with one feeling, what would you hope it would be?

I would hope she leaves feeling confident, beautiful, and completely herself. Whether she is shopping for a boudoir photoshoot, a special occasion, or simply for her own pleasure, I want her to remember that sensuality is not something reserved for a select few. Every woman deserves to feel extraordinary.

At Madame Sensuelle, many of our clients choose a private fitting experience, allowing them to explore styles, silhouettes, and sizes in a relaxed and discreet atmosphere. It is often the perfect preparation for a boudoir session.

When Budget Matters Most: Dressing for Modern Muse Boudoir

A beautiful boudoir wardrobe does not need to cost hundreds of euros.

As I mentioned before, some of the most striking images come from combinations like:

  • A white tank top and jeans
  • A vintage slip dress
  • An oversized sweater
  • A men’s button-down shirt
  • Black trousers and a blazer
  • A simple bodysuit
  • Bare skin wrapped in linen bedding
  • A favorite piece of jewelry

The camera responds far more strongly to confidence, texture, movement, and authenticity than it does to price tags.

I’ve photographed women in couture lingerie and women in borrowed denim.

The magic never comes from the clothing itself.

It comes from the woman wearing it and feeling comfortable in her own skin.

Think In Layers for Boudoir

One final styling tip:

Bring more variety than you think you’ll need.

A well-curated wardrobe often includes:

  • One lingerie look
  • One fashion-forward look
  • One casual look
  • One minimal or implied-nude look
  • One sentimental piece

This creates visual variety while still allowing your gallery to feel cohesive and intentional.

Most importantly, it gives us room to explore different facets of your story throughout the session and helps create a final result that feels dynamic and personal.

Don’t feel obligated to have ALL of these outfit options for your boudoir shoot. If you can only come up with one of these looks, that’s totally fine.

But if you want to play around with a few different looks, it can be nice to gather 2–3 options before shoot day.
