Paris photoshoots in September have this wonderful in-between quality that you just don’t get at any other time of year. In fact, if you’re wondering about the best month for photos in Paris, September makes a very convincing case.
September is technically the beginning of fall, but Paris hasn’t entirely gotten the memo yet. You can have a warm, sunny morning that feels decidedly like summer, followed by an evening when you suddenly wish you’d brought a sweater. The trees are still mostly green. The terraces are full. The light is beginning to soften. And, perhaps most noticeably, the Parisians are back.
If you’ve ever been to Paris in August and then again in September, you know exactly what I mean.
August has its own very specific rhythm. Many Parisians leave the city for their annual summer holidays, neighborhood businesses take their congés annuels, and certain streets can feel surprisingly quiet. Then September arrives and everyone comes home.
School starts again. The boulangerie that was mysteriously closed for four weeks reopens. Friends are squeezing around tiny café tables catching up after vacation. People are actually going somewhere in the morning instead of leisurely wandering toward the nearest terrace.
Paris feels like itself again.
For photoshoots, that shift makes September a great time to be here. You still have much of the beauty and warm weather of summer, but with a little more texture, movement, and everyday Parisian life happening around you. September also falls into that lovely shoulder season territory between summer and fall, making it one of my favorite times to photograph the city.

Why Paris Feels Different in September
There’s a French phrase you’ll hear constantly at this time of year: la rentrée.
Literally, it means “the return,” but culturally it’s much bigger than simply coming back from vacation. It’s the return to school, work, routines, projects, appointments, packed Métros, dinner plans, and normal life after summer.
And you can feel it everywhere.
In August, Paris has a slightly languid quality. September has momentum.
That doesn’t necessarily mean September is quiet—quite the opposite. It can be a busy month for travel, work, cultural events, and fashion. But once the summer crowds begin to shift and the city settles into its September rhythm, there can be fewer crowds in certain places than during the height of peak season. There’s something fun about photographing Paris when the city is properly inhabited again.
Personally, I love having that little bit of real life happening in the background.
The goal of a Paris photoshoot isn’t to make Paris look like an abandoned film set. It’s to create beautiful portraits of you in the City of Light. A cyclist passing in the distance, café chairs being set out for the morning, someone walking a very small dog with a disproportionately large personality—these details give photographs a sense of place!
What Is Paris Weather Like in September?
September is one of those months when checking the weather forecast before getting dressed is actually useful.
Early September can still feel very much like summer. Warm days and sunny days are pretty common, and we’ve also had September days when everyone arrives at the photoshoot wondering why they packed jackets.
But as the month progresses, mornings become noticeably cooler. The air feels crisper, evenings cool down faster, and by late September, you’re more likely to encounter a cloudy day or some rain.
Basically: September likes options.
For a photoshoot, this is actually great.
You don’t have the intense heat that can make summer sessions uncomfortable, particularly for young children, but you also aren’t dealing with genuinely cold winter mornings. You can wear a beautiful dress without freezing, add a jacket or knit if needed, and choose fabrics with a little more weight and movement.
The weather conditions can change from one September day to another, so bringing a layer is always a good idea.
And please don’t panic if the forecast shows clouds.
Cloudy Paris mornings can photograph beautifully. That soft light gives us wonderfully even skin tones, and the creams, grays, blues, stone, and greenery around the city all become a little richer. A forecast doesn’t need to show a giant yellow sun for your photos to be gorgeous.
The good news is that some of the days clients worry about most when looking at the forecast end up giving us absolutely beautiful photographs.
September Light Is a Photographer’s Friend
One of the biggest differences between photographing Paris in high summer and photographing it in September is the light.
By September, sunrise is beginning to move later and the sun sits differently in the sky. The very bright, sometimes intense summer light starts becoming softer.
From a professional photographer perspective, this gives us so much to work with.
There can still be that lovely warm morning glow, but it tends to feel gentler. Architectural details show beautifully. Skin tones look lovely. And when we have an overcast morning, Paris suddenly becomes this enormous natural softbox.
September also gives photographs a little more visual depth than high summer. Toward the end of the month, you may begin to see the earliest changes in the trees, while gardens and parks haven’t yet made their full transition into autumn.
If you’ve been dreaming of a fall photoshoot but don’t necessarily want full autumn foliage and chilly temperatures, this can be the perfect time.
It’s not quite fall.
It’s not really summer.
It’s September.
And that’s exactly what I like about it.
The Best Paris Photoshoot Locations in September
There really isn’t a bad location in Paris in September, but we have a few favorites that work particularly well with the season. The best places depend on the feeling you want from your gallery—grand and iconic, quiet and Parisian, green and relaxed, or a combination of all three.
Here are a few of our best spots for September.
Place Dauphine: September Photoshoot Location paris
If I had to choose one September favorite, Place Dauphine would be very, very high on the list.
Tucked away on Île de la Cité, it feels surprisingly intimate considering how central it is. You have classic Parisian façades, café tables, trees, benches, beautiful little streets nearby, and that lovely sense that you’re somewhere people actually live rather than simply standing in front of a monument.
September suits Place Dauphine particularly well.
The softer light works beautifully with the architecture, while the trees give us that transitional late-summer/early-autumn feeling. It’s polished without feeling overly formal and distinctly Parisian without needing to shout about it.
For couples, solo portraits, anniversaries, and smaller families, it’s a great place to start.
Trocadéro: September Photoshoot Location Paris
If the Eiffel Tower is important to you, Trocadéro remains one of our favorite options.
There’s a good reason people come to Paris wanting that view.
In September, the slightly later sunrise also makes an early-morning Eiffel Tower photoshoot a bit more civilized than it is in June or July. You don’t have to wake up at quite such an alarming hour to take advantage of beautiful morning light.
Trocadéro gives us a great view of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. But there are also stairs, architectural details, and nearby areas that allow the session to feel varied rather than like 100 versions of “Hello, here I am with the Eiffel Tower.”
Bir-Hakeim and Champ de Mars: September Photoshoot Location Paris
If you want the Eiffel Tower but prefer more variety in the scenery, Bir-Hakeim and Champ de Mars are another excellent September combination.
Bir-Hakeim gives us strong architectural lines, the Seine, and Eiffel Tower views, while Champ de Mars introduces greenery, beautiful scenery, and more space to move.
That combination can be particularly helpful with children. Trust me, kids generally don’t want to stand perfectly still and contemplate Haussmannian architecture. They want to MOVE.

The Louvre and Tuileries: September Photoshoot Location Paris
The Louvre and Tuileries are beautiful throughout the year, but September gives these locations a different feeling than August.
In August, the quieter Parisian rhythm can make the Louvre area feel unusually calm early in the day. In September, the city has returned—but an early start still gives us the opportunity to work with fewer people before the area becomes truly busy.
The Louvre Museum is fantastic if you love clean architecture, symmetry, stone, and something a little more editorial. Adding the Tuileries gives you greenery and softness, so the final gallery doesn’t feel overly architectural.
It’s a great choice if you want photographs that feel elegant and unmistakably Parisian without necessarily making the Eiffel Tower the main character.
Jardin du Luxembourg: September Photoshoot Location Paris
For families, Luxembourg Gardens are always worth considering.
In September, the garden is still lush from summer, especially earlier in the month, but the light and atmosphere are beginning to shift toward autumn. There’s room for walking, movement, sitting, playing, and those in-between family moments that often become our favorite photographs.
It’s particularly good for children because a park gives everyone permission to loosen up a little.
We can make a beautiful family portrait and then let your three-year-old run.
Both can be true.
Let’s Talk About September Photoshoot Outfit Ideas
September is when layers become your best friend.
Early in the month, you may be perfectly comfortable in a dress, blouse, linen trousers, or other lighter pieces. Later in September, you may want a blazer, light sweater, trench, or jacket—particularly for a morning session.
Warm neutrals are beautiful at this time of year: camel, cream, navy, rust, warm brown, muted blues. But I wouldn’t feel obligated to dress like an autumn leaf simply because the calendar says September!
Your outfit should still feel like you.
More importantly, choose pieces that move well and that you aren’t constantly adjusting. If something looks incredible while you’re standing perfectly still in front of your hotel mirror but requires readjustment every six seconds, it’s probably not the thing to wear for a photoshoot where we’ll be walking, sitting, moving, laughing, and generally behaving like humans.
And don’t forget comfortable shoes, or at least bring a pair for walking between locations. The most important thing is that you feel like yourself and can actually enjoy the experience rather than spending the morning thinking about your feet.

Why We Still Love Morning Photoshoots in September
Yes, we’re going to tell you to wake up early.
But there is a reason.
Paris gets busy, and September marks the return of normal life in the city. Sunrise sessions give us cleaner backgrounds, beautiful light, cooler temperatures, and more freedom to actually use the location rather than constantly navigating around crowds.
For many of our locations, morning is simply the best time of day to photograph. And as a Paris photographer, I would much rather ask you for an early start and give you room to move than spend half your session trying to photograph around hundreds of people.
It also means everyone tends to arrive looking fresh.
This is especially important for families. The best way to approach the morning is to do the photoshoot first, then go have breakfast, explore Paris, visit a museum, take a nap, eat several pastries—whatever your Paris day has in store.
You’re not spending the entire afternoon telling the kids, “Don’t get anything on your shirt because we have pictures tonight.”
Everyone wins.
And because sunrise is getting later in September, morning sessions become progressively easier as the month goes on.
Who Is a September Paris Photoshoot Perfect For?
Pretty much everyone, which sounds suspiciously convenient coming from a photographer, but hear me out.
For families, temperatures are generally much more comfortable than during the hottest part of summer.
For couples and engagement sessions, you get wonderful flexibility with clothing and locations.
For solo portraits, the transition into fall lends itself beautifully to a slightly more editorial wardrobe.
For anniversaries and milestone trips, the city feels energetic without having that peak-summer quality.
Is September definitively the best season for everyone? Not necessarily—Paris has something different to offer throughout the year. But if you love mild temperatures, softer light, summer greenery, a hint of fall, and a city that feels fully awake after August, September is an ideal time to be here.
And if this is simply your first trip to Paris and you want photographs because you’re here and this experience matters to you—that’s reason enough.
A photoshoot can also be one of the best things you plan during your trip because it gives you a morning to slow down, explore a beautiful part of the city, and actually come home with photographs of everyone together.
September really is a wonderful time to experience Paris.
