20 French-Inspired Books You Should Read

France has long been a muse for writers, with its rich history, romantic allure, and vibrant culture serving as fertile ground for literary inspiration.

From the bustling streets of Paris to the picturesque countryside, French settings have provided the backdrop for countless captivating stories.

We decided to put together a list of contemporary must-reads and timeless classics for you, so there’s an option for every occasion!

This is NOT a list of French literature written by French authors. Instead, we decided to focus on top picks for an American library (or english-speaking readers in general) that invoke French culture and everything we love about it. Some of the perspectives are from ex-pats who have moved to France. Their love affairs with Paris and French society make these stories extra relatable, especially when they talk about the Eiffel Tower and what real life is like in a French city or in rural France. No matter the season, it's always a good idea to pick up a book. You won't find the Little Prince on this list, but you WILL find the next best thing!

So whether you're seeking a taste of Parisian romance, historical intrigue, or simply a glimpse into French life, here are 20 French-inspired books that promise to transport you to the enchanting world of la belle France

1. "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah

Set in France during World War II, "The Nightingale" follows the lives of young girls, Vianne and Isabelle, as they navigate love, loss, and resistance against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied France. This poignant tale of courage and sacrifice showcases the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Vianne, the elder sister, strives to protect her family and maintain a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos of war. Isabelle, on the other hand, is a fiery and rebellious spirit who joins the French Resistance, risking her life to fight against the Nazi occupation and aid the Allied cause.

As the war unfolds and their paths diverge, Vianne and Isabelle must confront their own fears, betrayals, and sacrifices in order to survive and protect those they love.

This book is so empowering and memorable!

If you’re looking for a literary classic, this is a must-read. Hemingway's memoir of his time as a struggling young writer in 1920s Paris offers readers an intimate glimpse into the bohemian lifestyle of the Lost Generation. Filled with vivid descriptions of Parisian cafes, literary salons, and encounters with fellow expatriates such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein, "A Moveable Feast" is a love letter to the City of Light.

Bonus: if you are traveling to Paris, you can actually visit some of Hemingway’s haunts. There are several bars in Paris that were frequented by the author and his ex-pat contemporaries when they were writing and boozing their way around Europe.

7. "A Waiter in Paris” by Edward Chisholm

I just read this book a few months ago for the first time, and was so hooked the entire time! There are a lot of books that show the most beautiful, romantic parts of Paris, and one thing I loved about this one is that it exposes some of the grittier bits of the city! Big cities have many layers, after all, and this book is unique in revealing some of those other layers.

This is NOT your typical “Paris is paradise” story. It’s real and raw and funny and a little grimy…but that’s what makes it great! This is one of my favorite books this year.

Chisholm’s memoir offers a captivating glimpse into the author's experiences working as a waiter in Paris during the 1960s when he moved there from London in his twenties without any money. Through vivid anecdotes and humorous observations, Chisholm paints a vivid portrait of life in the bustling bistros and brasseries of the French capital. From encounters with eccentric customers to behind-the-scenes glimpses of restaurant culture, the book provides a new perspective on Parisian life and the art of hospitality. With its delightful storytelling and affectionate portrayal of the city, "A Waiter in Paris" is a dynamic read for anyone with a love for France and its culinary traditions.

10. Real Estate by Deborah Levy

This is another memoir that’s totally worth reading. And it came out recently, in 2021! I read it last year, and it was the perfect book to get through in just a few days because it's an easy read.

Throughout the novel, Paris serves as a symbolic backdrop, evoking memories of the protagonist's time spent in the City of Light and the transformative experiences she encountered there. As she navigates the streets of Paris and reflects on her past, the protagonist grapples with questions of home, identity, and the elusive nature of truth.

Okay, so this memoir isn’t really about Paris, and only a small part of the book is set in France. BUT it’s still an excellent read (especially for women and mothers!) that manages to conjure up the magic of living in a Parisian apartment, even for just a few months. I really enjoyed this book and I hope you do too!

11. "The Paris Wife" by Paula McLain

Told from the perspective of Hadley Richardson, Ernest Hemingway's first wife, "The Paris Wife" offers a captivating glimpse into the tumultuous world of 1920s Paris. As Hadley navigates her marriage to the charismatic but volatile Hemingway, she finds herself drawn into the vibrant expatriate community that includes luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ezra Pound.

You can think of this book as the companion book to “A Moveable Feast.” I think it’s fun to get two perspectives on the same events and time period. Especially since Hemingway often gets all the attention. Let’s hear about his first wife’s experience, for a change!
